Mood Board : Gray & Gold Decor Plus How to Easily Make a Space Feel "Coastal"

Recently, I posed a question in my Instagram stories asking what topics you’d like me to cover. Many responded that they’d be interested in seeing how I transition a room from one season to the next or how to simply switch up the decor for a refreshing new look. I thought that sharing some mood board inspiration would help answer these questions!

Today, since most of us are still in the middle of winter, I decided to focus on a neutral, wintry color scheme that can easily transition to a coastal vibe with just a few different accents. Here is the first look that only has very subtle aspects of coastal design:

I started with a neutral gray/off white rug and found some really cute pillow covers that pull in all the different shades of gray and white from the rug.

My favorite accent color against a gray palette is gold! Check out these gorgeous gold mirrors and lamps!

Now, the easiest way to give any space a coastal vibe is to choose shapes and materials that resemble things like bamboo, palm leaves, scallops, starfish, etc.

Did you notice that even in the design above, the gold lamp base is shaped like bamboo, the gold lantern has a subtle scallop or “fish scale” pattern, and the garden stool, also gold, originated in China but can be seen in Westernized versions of those designs (think chinoiserie) which also has a strong influence in Palm Beach chic styling.

These subtle designs are perfect for any time of year, but if you’d like to put a little more emphasis on coastal decor in your space, consider some of the tips below:

Add gold and/or white coral or other coastal figurines.

Replace one or two of the pillow covers with a more obvious coastal pattern.

Hang coastal wall art.

Mix and match any of these patterns, decor and wall art for a fresh new look to your room! I selected a few of the items to swap into this mood board from the ones I linked above. You can even shop your own home as I did in my last post, Styling My Coastal Living Room for Winter.

I hope that after reading this, changing up a room’s decor feels easier than ever! Happy decorating!

Sending Sunshine,
